Quddus (The Sanctified)
Al-Ghazali:
Hu
is sanctified i.e. free, cleansed away, independent of any type of
attribute that is understood or sensed by any cognitive faculty or
sensor!
I did not say: Hu is
sanctified from faults and shortcomings (as others
have said). Had I said such words, it would have been away from the
Adab (Etiquette): it would have been equivalent to saying that the
President of such and such a country is not a thief! in an effort to
say: on the contrary, he is honest. Often this type of negation of
something is indicative of the possibility of its presence within the
human mind.
Hu
is sanctified from any form of attributes and descriptions anyone
can imagine. Hu is even sanctified from any such process of perfection
that anyone may/can imagine.
Allah can indeed sanctify a slave in two ways:
1. Cleanse and free him away from any cognitive
processes or imagination with regards to Allah; the same holds true for
the senses. (Therefore the feelings of the slave within are based upon
the Nur (Divine
Light) of Ma’refat (Divine Gnosis) and ‘Ilm (Knowledge)
emanating from the prophetic lantern.)
2. Sanctified from ‘Irādat (Elan) i.e. the slave
loves and desires none but Allah. Consequently the slave has no Shauq
(Yearning) for other than Allah.
In proportion of how much effort the slave exerts for Allah on the
path, his/her heart gives out Mahab-bat (Divine Love) for Allah.
Qurtubi:
Abul-Hassn Ibn Al-Hasar said the word means to cleanse.
Ibn Arabi: From Quddus (The Sanctified) ten characteristics of Allah
can be deduced:
1. Sanctification from partners, helpers and so on.
2. Sanctification from similarities i.e. Hu is
not
similar to anything not that Hu is dissimilar but the very concept of
similarity does not apply to Hu.
3. Sanctification from contrast (Adhdād) i.e. no
member of the creation can be contrasted with Allah or vice
versa; there are no boundaries of separation that can mark where
Allah starts
or ends, no focuses or contrasts!
4. Sanctification from offspring
5. Sanctification from imagination, thoughts or any
mental faculties
6. Sanctification from limits
7. Sanctification from shapes or forms that can be
grasped by the eyes
8. Sanctification from any need for Hu’s creation
9. Sanctification from anything else to cleanse Hu
10. Sanctification from any lack of perfection
The Prophet said: "A nation is not sanctified unless the weak in her is
able to regain his right from the strong without being hindered".
Dara: So we understand from this that a person and as well as a nation
can be sanctified by Allah and this
Hadith (Prophetic Narration)
clearly shows us the versatility of such sanctification. I checked the
Hadith databases and this is the only time where the sanctification
term is used for a nation.
